This American Carnage

This American President

On the day he took office four long years ago, he said, “This American Carnage stops right here and stops right now.”

Instead, it started right there, and right then. And it culminated, right where it began, in an American Carnage perpetrated today in our Nation’s Capital.

As the day began, I was shocked, but gladdened, by the Senate results in Georgia. But I also knew that it would add to the fire that was just beginning to burn in our Nation’s Capital.

And burn it did.

And for this, I am enraged.

I am filled with blood stained hate for President Trump and his acolytes that willed this to happen. That cynically and cravenly created a pre-packaged conspiracy before the election and then so cynically and cravenly used the doubt they manufactured to justify a charade perpetuated by a morally bankrupt despot and bully.

I am filled with disgust for a political party that sacrificed the lives of hundreds and thousands of American citizens to a virus that that was minimized and dealt with in a manner whose sole purpose was to keep the despot in power.

I am consumed with anger towards those around me who defended the antics of this man child because they thought it was amusing to see him trash talk the press, the Democrats, and anyone else that didn’t commit themselves to the lies he embodied.

I am sickened beyond all measure that in the wake of the cowardice of the Republican Party, it will take our country untold years before we can escape from the cycle of revenge politics they set in motion.

Yes, he will be out of office.

And yes, McConnell will no longer be majority leader.

But the man and the specter of Trump, and the detritus of hate, mistrust, anger, and mean spiritedness he fomented will live on. Not only in our national discourse, but perhaps in the irretrievably damaged institutions that once defined, at the very least, the good intentions of a country forever stained by his presence.

American Carnage, indeed.
